Staying Fit during a Trip to High Hampton Inn

In the weeks leading up to a vacation, people typically make an effort to eat well and exercise regularly to be in the best shape possible. Whether you’re vacationing at the beach, lake or mountains, trips away from home usually involve indulging in different foods and drinks and often times little exercise.  A visit to High Hampton Inn includes not only great dining but also unique ways to stay active on your vacation. Below are four fun ways to keep in shape while making the most of your stay at High Hampton.

Hiking and Fitness Trails – Since High Hampton is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you are guaranteed access to a number of hiking trails. There are 15-miles of well-marked hiking trails on property for you to explore alone or with a guide. To reach the summit of Rock Mountain at 4,370 feet, you will need about an hour-and-a-half.  A four-hour round-trip excursion leads to the peak of Chimney Top Mountain, located at 4,618 feet, and back down.  The Lake Trail is ideal for visitors looking for a mild hike.  The 1.5-mile trail meanders around Hampton Lake, giving you many opportunities to enjoy the area’s flora and fauna.  The Fitness Trail includes 10 exercise stations that will tone your muscles.  The trail begins at the upper end of Hampton Lake and finishes at the base of Rock Mountain. All of these hikes allow for spectacular views and great cardiovascular exercise.

Hampton Lake – Hampton Lake offers numerous ways for you to stay active all day long. The 35-acre lake features a wading pool, swimming area, beach, two docks and swim platforms, and a playground. Spending an afternoon kayaking, canoeing or paddle boating is a great way to get active and enjoy a peaceful summer day on the water.  Those looking for something more vigorous will enjoy swimming laps in the refreshing mountain water.

Beanstalk – If you are seeking the thrill of rock climbing, the Beanstalk is for you.  The eight-sided, 28-foot climbing tower located outside of the Hampton Health Club and Spa the perfect way for adults and kids to work on total body fitness.  Arm and leg muscles are sure to be toned as you make your way to the top of the rock.

Outdoor Sports – You can also enjoy spending time outdoors playing golf, tennis, and bocce ball. A round of golf on the George W. Cobb 18-hole golf course or playing tennis on one of the clay courts are both great ways to burn some calories. To hone your skills, you can participate in our golf and tennis clinics that are available throughout the year. Our two new bocce ball courts are also great ways to get active and indulge in a little friendly competition.

High Hampton Inn Celebrates 90 Years of Making Memories in 2012

Many things have changed during the span of the last 90 years.  Communication has evolved from Morse code to iPhones, sixteen US presidents have ruled the country, and popular music stars have gone from flapper to rapper.  Few places today can proudly say they are still around after that amount of time and still maintain the traditions that were popular when they first opened.   High Hampton Inn is one of those places.

What appealed to guests about High Hampton in 1922 is the same in 2012.  Tradition reigns here, where gentlemen don coats and ties for dinner, high tea is served everyday at 4 p.m., miniature donkeys Fred and Ed still offer children hayrides each summer, and Southern favorites like High Hampton Fried Chicken make an appearance on the menu each week.  At an elevation of 3,600 feet above sea level, “air conditioning” in the summer is still a cool mountain breeze through an open window, especially since evening temperatures drop into the low 60s in July and August.  Free from the trappings of technology, the Inn encourages you to unplug from today’s seemingly omnipresent tech-fueled world and reconnect with family and friends.

Since we are located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you have easy access to the quaint antique shops, boutiques, and art galleries located throughout Cashiers and nearby Highlands.  The area’s unique geography also boasts hundreds of waterfalls, quiet lakes, stone mountains, and rhododendron forests.

Memories and families are at the core of High Hampton.  In the estate’s more than 200-year history, it has changed hands only three times.  In the mid-nineteenth century, General Wade Hampton, who would later become governor of South Carolina and then a U.S. Senator, purchased the property.  He later gave the property to his niece, Caroline Hampton, and her husband, Dr. William Stewart Halsted.  In 1922, E.L. McKee, a Sylva businessman and industrialist purchased High Hampton, starting a family tradition that continues with his grandson, Will, who oversees the property today.

High Hampton Inn’s Spring Golf School – Q&A with Golf Professional Craig Hartle

High Hampton Inn’s golf professional Craig Hartle has worked in his field for 28 years, with 25 of those years serving as a Class-A PGA Professional. He brings to the resort years of experience that he has gained from working with, consulting for, and teaching at resorts and private country clubs.

Craig is a skilled teacher, and he will be sharing his tricks of the trade at High Hampton’s Spring Golf School May 15-18th.  The golf school is open to 10 students, which will allow for plenty of one-on-one time with Craig to hone your skills!

He took some time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions about the school and golf at the resort.

1.  What is the inspiration behind the golf school?

The Golf School at High Hampton was designed for couples to relax and enjoy the wonderful mountain air and the hospitality of High Hampton while learning about their golf game and what they can do to improve their skills.

2.  What are some of the most common mistakes people make when golfing?  Will you be addressing them in the school?

One of the most common mistakes in golf is thinking you need a perfect swing.  That is not the case.  During the school, we will learn the basics of the golf swing and how to trust your swing so that you are more confident in your game.

3.  What is the question that you get asked most often by golfers?  What advice do you give them?

The most common question asked by students is, “how do I get rid of the ‘yips’?”  The “yips” is the common term for a nervous jerk at impact, which usually occurs during the putting stroke. To stop the “yips,” you need to have trust and confidence in your swing.  We will study this at the Golf School.

4.  What is your favorite hole on the High Hampton course?

My favorite hole is our 8th hole.  Located on a peninsula that juts into Hampton Lake, the scenic par-3, 160-yard 8th hole has been designated “One of America’s Great Golf Holes” by Golf Digest for its breathtaking panorama featuring 360-degree views of mountains, the lake, and the resort grounds.  It’s a challenge, but its beauty makes up for its difficulty.

5.  Are there activities available for non-golfers during the golf school?

For the non-golfing roommate, we will substitute spa services at the Hampton Health Club & Spa. Choices include massages and manicures and pedicures.
