Staying Fit during a Trip to High Hampton Inn

In the weeks leading up to a vacation, people typically make an effort to eat well and exercise regularly to be in the best shape possible. Whether you’re vacationing at the beach, lake or mountains, trips away from home usually involve indulging in different foods and drinks and often times little exercise.  A visit to High Hampton Inn includes not only great dining but also unique ways to stay active on your vacation. Below are four fun ways to keep in shape while making the most of your stay at High Hampton.

Hiking and Fitness Trails – Since High Hampton is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you are guaranteed access to a number of hiking trails. There are 15-miles of well-marked hiking trails on property for you to explore alone or with a guide. To reach the summit of Rock Mountain at 4,370 feet, you will need about an hour-and-a-half.  A four-hour round-trip excursion leads to the peak of Chimney Top Mountain, located at 4,618 feet, and back down.  The Lake Trail is ideal for visitors looking for a mild hike.  The 1.5-mile trail meanders around Hampton Lake, giving you many opportunities to enjoy the area’s flora and fauna.  The Fitness Trail includes 10 exercise stations that will tone your muscles.  The trail begins at the upper end of Hampton Lake and finishes at the base of Rock Mountain. All of these hikes allow for spectacular views and great cardiovascular exercise.

Hampton Lake – Hampton Lake offers numerous ways for you to stay active all day long. The 35-acre lake features a wading pool, swimming area, beach, two docks and swim platforms, and a playground. Spending an afternoon kayaking, canoeing or paddle boating is a great way to get active and enjoy a peaceful summer day on the water.  Those looking for something more vigorous will enjoy swimming laps in the refreshing mountain water.

Beanstalk – If you are seeking the thrill of rock climbing, the Beanstalk is for you.  The eight-sided, 28-foot climbing tower located outside of the Hampton Health Club and Spa the perfect way for adults and kids to work on total body fitness.  Arm and leg muscles are sure to be toned as you make your way to the top of the rock.

Outdoor Sports – You can also enjoy spending time outdoors playing golf, tennis, and bocce ball. A round of golf on the George W. Cobb 18-hole golf course or playing tennis on one of the clay courts are both great ways to burn some calories. To hone your skills, you can participate in our golf and tennis clinics that are available throughout the year. Our two new bocce ball courts are also great ways to get active and indulge in a little friendly competition.

Arriving in the Cashier’s area more than 50 years ago, High Hampton is home to the unique white squirrel.

1.  White Squirrels – Only at High Hampton can you see North Carolina White Squirrels, which arrived in the Cashier’s area more than 50 years ago. Even though many people think these squirrels are albinos, the actually aren’t.  They are variants of the Eastern Gray Squirrel. Lucky guests can find these unique squirrels zipping around High Hampton’s expansive grounds. When you search for them, don’t forget to bring your camera so you can get a shot of them in action!

2.  100-Year-Old Dahlia Garden – The stunning dahlias were first planted more than 100 years ago by Caroline Halsted, a niece of General Wade Hampton, the original owner of the High Hampton property. Only at High Hampton can you cut blooms from the acre-long garden to display in your room as well as take home with you upon your departure.  High Hampton also invites you to enjoy the second-annual Dinner in the Dahlias, which will take place on August 20th and September 10th.

3.  Giant Heirloom Tree Garden – High Hampton is home to a one-of-a-kind heirloom tree garden. Planted more than 100 years ago by the Halsted family, a Ginkgo tree, Bottlebrush Buckeye, Bald Cyprus, a fiery Copper Beech, and one of America’s largest Frasier Firs not only offer amazing foliage each fall, they also provide an escape from the summer sun. Only at High Hampton can you walk among trees fit for giants!

4.  Miniature Donkeys – Fred and Ed are one-of-a-kind – actually, two-of-a-kind. Only at High Hampton can you feed our famous miniature donkeys snacks. Long time visitors will tell you they love carrots and apples, which guests can pick up from the kitchen. Fred and Ed also happily take kids on hayrides every summer and during holiday House Parties.

5. Completely disconnect – Only at High Hampton are we proud to feature no telephones or televisions in the guest rooms. Here you are encouraged to “unplug” from technology and get back to basics by spending time with family and friends. Outdoor entertainment rules the roost, and you can enjoy our 18-hole golf course, Hampton Lake for swimming and boating, numerous hiking trails, tennis, and more.  (There is wi-fi available throughout the property if needed)

High Hampton Inn’s Spa Manager, Faith Hartle, has worked at High Hampton for two seasons.  She took some time out of her busy schedule to answer questions about the Hampton Health Spa, just one of the many ways to relax on your vacation at High Hampton Inn.

1.  Is the spa offering any special fall packages?

Yes, this autumn we will be offering two special packages. The first is an exfoliating foot scrub, and the second package is a revitalizing eye treatment. Both are complimentary with an 80-minute custom massage.

2.  What is the most popular treatment at the spa?

We have two very popular treatments here at the spa. Our signature Customized Massage combines elements of Swedish massage with deep tissue massage and is geared toward your individual needs. This treatment can last 50 minutes or 80 minutes, depending on the client’s needs. Just as popular, is The Hampton Signature Facial that includes a soothing moisturizing masque and a relaxing head, neck, and shoulder massage. This 50-minute facial treatment is customized for each person’s specific skin type.

3.  What is your favorite spa treatment, and why?

There is no one service that I can pick as my favorite. They treatments are all fabulous. From custom massages to nail treatments to chemical peels, combined with our organic skin care products, we really do it all.

The Hampton Health Spa is the perfect place to experience your first spa treatment. Our staff of highly-trained, caring professionals promise relaxation, revitalization, and cater to every individual’s needs. No one will leave our spa disappointed.

5.  How far in advance do you need to make a reservation for the spa?
