Summer Fun at High Hampton Inn

Julia Boeve has been the Recreation Director at High Hampton Inn since 2009.  She, along with Head Counselor Annie Hettinger, love working with our younger guests.  They use their imaginations to create activities for our Children’s and Teen’s Programs so there is always a new and exciting adventure or activity to try.  Both have upbeat attitudes, are always smiling, and enjoy seeing the positive influence they have on visiting children.

Julia and Annie took a few moments out of their busy summer schedules to answer some questions about the Children’s and Teen’s Programs.

1.  What is new this summer for the younger children to try when they visit High Hampton?

We have updated the theme days and our arts & crafts.  For our theme days, our little guests can enjoy Pirates and Princesses Day, Disney Day, Cheering and Sports Day, Playground and Picnic Day, and we always have Hayride Day where Fred and Ed take the kids around the Inn’s lawn in a wagon.  On Pizza and a Movie Day, we tie dye t-shirts that the children can wear while watching the film.  For our art lovers we have added chalkboards to all the tables in Noah’s Ark, allowing the kids to color right on top of them.

2.  What new features can teen guests expect?

The teens are continuing to enjoy Youth at High Hampton, where we offer hikes, geocaching, bonfires, Frisbee golf, and volleyball.  Occasionally we make offsite trips to Sliding Rock, where the river has turned large boulders into a waterslide.  We have also added a new fleet of new boats that include kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats.  They are all very popular with the teens and many want to spend the afternoon rowing on Hampton Lake!

3.  Is there an activity that is loved by children and teens alike?

Kids of all ages are really enjoying the lake this year, not that they have not in years before, but it seems all they want to do is swim.  The addition of the new boats probably has had an impact on the amount of lake love we have seen as well.  Here’s a little secret – all of the counselors are really enjoying the lake too

4.  What is your favorite activity?

Our favorite camp day is the Pirates and Princesses Day.  We receive a visit from Black Beard the Pirate, and after finding a copy of his treasure map, we all go on a treasure hunt!  This day is a lot of fun because it encourages the kids to use their imaginations to become their favorite princess or pirate.

5.  When do the Children’s and Teen’s Programs take place and how much do they cost?

Our Children’s and Teen’s Programs take place from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The Children’s Program takes place six days a week from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is recommended for children ages 3 to 9 years old.  Each evening from 6 to 9 p.m., there are fun events such as hayrides, pajama parties, Mexican fiestas, games and cookouts.

Youth at High Hampton is held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and is open to kids 11-15 years old.

The cost of the children’s and teen’s programs is $5 per hour per child.
